Gangs scorching the melting pot

The gang activity in Manatee County has been growing over the past six or seven years.

On Ninth Street, south of Winn-Dixie, the "SUR 13" graffiti "tags" are visible on the side of duplexes on the east side of the road.

I had been going to DeSoto Square Mall for more than 25 years, but now I shop online. The Toys "R" Us store on Cortez Road, south of the mall, is totally unsafe after dark.

If businesses and citizens don't offer our support for more policing, we will be losing more neighborhoods to the gangs.

I'm aware we need Latino labor to do the work that Americans think they are too good to do, but we don't have to put up with violence and kidnappings.

This is America, the melting pot. Let's not scorch the pot so badly it cannot be used.

Sarasota is the proud recipient of a National Award for outstanding participation for "National Night Out" Against Crime 2008, we had over 1,000 citizens attend.  We are hoping to do even better this year and with your help we hope to achieve that. National Night Out will be on Tuesday August 4, 2009 at Payne Park, 2100 East Laurel Street (located in the heart of downtown Sarasota) from 6-9 pm.  We are looking for volunteers to make finger friendly desserts such as, cookies, brownies, etc… and we are also looking for volunteers who can come and help us before, during and after the event.
