The Energy Economic Zone was not supposed to be this complicated.
The pilot created by the state Legislature in 2009 was envisioned as a tax incentive program that would spur environmentally friendly development in Sarasota County and create jobs in emerging industries.
Instead, the county has recently come under fire from community members who worry the program could turn into a back-door giveaway of taxpayer dollars to big businesses that do not deserve the money. Some have questioned the value of government incentives for green business at all.
